Spoken Word Recognition of Code-Switched Words by Chinese-English Bilinguals
نویسنده
چکیده
Two experiments with Chinese–English bilinguals were conducted to examine the recognition of code-switched words in speech. In Experiment 1, listeners were asked to identify a codeswitched word in a sentence on the basis of increasing fragments of the word. In Experiment 2, listeners repeated the code-switched word following a predesignated point upon hearing the sentence. Converging evidence from these experiments shows that the successful recognition of code-switched words depends on the interaction among phonological, structural, and contextual information in the recognition process. The results also indicate that Chinese–English bilinguals can recognize code-switched words with the same amount of information as required by monolingual English listeners. These results are interpreted in terms of parallel activation and interactive processes in spoken word recognition. q 1996 Academic Press, Inc.

Parallel language activation and cognitive control during spoken word recognition in bilinguals.
Accounts of bilingual cognitive advantages suggest an associative link between cross-linguistic competition and inhibitory control. We investigate this link by examining English-Spanish bilinguals' parallel language activation during auditory word recognition and nonlinguistic Stroop performance. Thirty-one English-Spanish bilinguals and 30 English monolinguals participated in an eye-tracking s...
متن کاملBilinguals activate words from both languages when listening to spoken sentences: Evidence from an ERP-study
The current study examines whether bilingual word recognition in spoken sentences is influenced by cross-lingual phonological similarity. ERPs were measured while GermanEnglish bilinguals listened to German sentences. Target words in the sentences were either German-English homophones (e.g., eagle – Igel ‘hedgehog’), German words that were phonologically closely related to English words (e.g., ...
متن کاملSemantic Integration and Age of Acquisition Effects in Code-Blend Comprehension.
Semantic and lexical decision tasks were used to investigate the mechanisms underlying code-blend facilitation: the finding that hearing bimodal bilinguals comprehend signs in American Sign Language (ASL) and spoken English words more quickly when they are presented together simultaneously than when each is presented alone. More robust facilitation effects were observed for semantic decision th...
متن کاملWritten word recognition by the elementary and advanced level Persian-English bilinguals
According to a basic prediction made by the Revised Hierarchical Model (RHM), at early stages of language acquisition, strong L2-L1 lexical links are formed. RHM predicts that these links weaken with increasing proficiency, although they do not disappear even at higher levels of language development. To test this prediction, two groups of highly proficie...
متن کاملWord-level Language Identification in Bi-lingual Code-switched Texts
Code-switching is the practice of moving back and forth between two languages in spoken or written form of communication. In this paper, we address the problem of word-level language identification of code-switched sentences. Here, we primarily consider Hindi-English (Hinglish) code-switching, which is a popular phenomenon among urban Indian youth, though the approach is generic enough to be ex...
